An iconic city in the south of France

Biarritz, a gem of the Atlantic coast, rich in its architectural heritage and history, offers many surprises and beautiful discoveries. Here is what you should know about this stunning city.

The History of Biarritz

As it is the case for many coastal cities of France like Etretat, Biarritz was originally a fishing village before becoming a luxurious resort city. Biarritz is a historic coastal city that has grown from a humble fishing village to an internationally renowned seaside resort. The earliest known history dates back to the 12th century, when it was a small whaling and cod fishing settlement. In the 18th century, the city rose to fame as a popular tourist destination for European aristocrats, who took advantage of the healing properties of the natural hot springs and sea baths. However, the arrival of Napoleon III's wife, Empress Eugénie, in the mid-19th century was the event that brought fame to Biarritz. All of Europe became fascinated by this city, which seduced the Empress Eugénie. Her decision to build a sumptuous summer residence, the palatial Villa Eugenie (now known as the Palace Hotel), transformed Biarritz into a stylish playground for Europe's aristocracy and social elite. Then, more and more visitors came to enjoy the fresh air offered by this beautiful coastal city, nowadays considered as a summer paradise

Honoring the traditional music

Dance is a tradition in this region. Every local celebration is an opportunity to dance and dine all together. The Basque dancers of the village of Biarritz, Bayonne or Arbonne will make you vibrate to the sound and rhythm of their passion for the cultural heritage of the South West. The Basques have always manifested their deep attachment to their precious culture through the respect and the perpetuation of their local traditions. This has allowed them to keep a rich and spectacular repertoire of traditional dances, like the Fandango, which has been able to renew itself in order to adapt to the evolutions of society. One thing that never changes due to its symbolic importance is the moves that consist of showing the Basque flag. The tradition of dancing is often honored during local festivals. During those celebrations, the Basque choirs often accompany the dancers. You will be welcome to test your voice by joining the singers and singing the most famous tunes of the Basque repertoire.

The most famous festival of Hispanic influence is the Fêtes de Bayonne. Those are among the biggest French festivals, counting over a million visitors each year and are probably the greatest symbol of the Basque and Gascogne culture. Invented in 1932 by a group of friends, this festival takes place for five days and five nights. Dressed in red and white, which is the traditional Basque costume, festival-goers indulge in dance, singing, games and tasting the culinary wonders of the region. Among those games, we can cite the Tug of War, during which groups of men face each other in front of the crowd. The iconic figure presiding over the Fêtes de Bayonne is the King Léon, he is the idol mascot that presides over the five days of the festival, and he even has a song to his glory. If you wish to discover the south of France and its culture, those festivals are perfect! Do not forget to try local culinary specialties such as the soft Basque cheesecake, the savoury Basquaise chicken, the delicious Bayonne ham, the fondant Tome Basque cheese, the iconic Espelette pepper, and the exquisite red Basque wines…

The natural wonders of Biarritz

Le Rocher de la Vierge

The Rocher de la Vierge in Biarritz is inextricably linked to the image of Biarritz. The rock was named after the Statue de la Vierge erected on its summit in 1865. According to legend, the local fishermen encountered a terrible storm while chasing whales. Eventually, they were miraculously saved by a divine light that led them back to the port. The statue of the Virgin was thus erected on this rock as a symbol of their gratitude. However, Napoléon III was the one who decided to pierce the rock and connect it to the coast via a footbridge, creating the actual iconic Rocher de la Vierge. However, the first construction, made from wood, had to be reinforced. Gustave Eiffel was, therefore, commissioned to perform metalworking in 1887. This place promises a magical walk offering stunning views of the Basque coast and the ocean, especially at sunset

Phare de Biarritz

Built in 1834, the lighthouse of Biarritz has 248 steps and stands 73 meters above sea level. The lighthouse overlooks Cap Hainsart, so-called at the time because it is surrounded by oak trees; however, those have now been replaced by tamarisks, which promise an amazing natural view. This promontory marks the boundary between the sandy beaches of the Landes and the rocky coast of the Pays Basque. If you go to Biarritz, you should absolutely visit it and climb to its summit to admire the staggering panorama.
